I love hiking, but when we go walking in the mountains it’s usually a fairly solitary experience. The day I managed to get this shot of my husband, I was quite pleased with myself. I don’t usually manage to get that close.
It’s not that I’m particularly slow, but I just never seem to catch up. I’ve got hundreds of photos of his rucksack.
A few thousand of him already half-way down to the valley.
And probably a million where he’s nothing more than a speck on the horizon.
And no, before you ask. He hasn’t managed to lose me yet!

Thanks for the tips! You certainly hit the nail on the head with the “hike light”!
My hikes always take a lot longer when I’m stopping to take photos of flowers, waterfalls, etc. Every hiking group has to have some to chronicle all the events and scenery. Some day in the future they will be glad you took the time to photo the fun. 🙂
Totally agree !
You’re right! I never thought of it like that before!
I have been there too ! my ex used to go on walks like this too and my experiences were just like yours ! Distant person in the distance is so familiar. Trouble is now when I go walking I am always stopping to take photographs for my blog and takes me twice as long but for a good reason.
I think that’s half the trouble with me too – every photo taken is a minute or two lost!
Oh My Goodness ! This sounds like my hiking experience when I head out the 60-70 year olds leave me in the dust!
lol! My 71 year old father-in-law can walk me into the ground too!
I think that every walker has been in this position! And if you haven’t – you aren’t pushing yourself hard enough! It is true that when you stop to take photo’s you are always having to play catch up though.
You’re right – the problem is that I’m probably not the fastest walker in the world and taking photos doesn’t really help matters!
Oh I just found you blog and I love it, its a beautiful place
Thank you very much!
I love your sense of humor… Lovely photos of places I’d never have the privaledge to visit…
Thank you for popping by! I’m pleased that you like the photos.
I would love to know where these mountains are. Your pics so beautiful! Are you lucky enough to live near where you were hiking?
The mountains are the French Alps (south-eastern France). We only live a couple of hours away from where I took these photos, so we’re very lucky indeed!
Great photos – it used to bother me that I was always way behind everyone when out hiking or even on a stroll but now I have come to realise it is because I take the time to appreciate everything around me (and photo it.) It’s not a race and you often enjoy it more if the pace is slowed a little.
Yes, I agree, that it is good to be able to take the time to admire the scenery and spot the wildlife, instead of just trying to be the first to the top!
